SEO is changing a vast amount; there are huge amounts of people throughout the globe that still use outdated techniques though. SEO is all about analyzing the way the current search algothirms use data to rank sites, by using out dated techniques you are not going to get anywhere very quick. Every single year the major search engines just get smarter and smarter so you must always be one step ahead and only practice ethical and white hat techniques. Let us take a quick look at some of the outdated techniques, which used to work great but no longer really cut it.
Directory Submissions
Directory submissions used to be the best link building method out there. If you could submit to thousands of directories then you were guaranteed to get a cracking higher-ranking. But because these began to get so ill-treated Google started to slowly but certainly depreciate links from directories. The only directories that are good these days seem to be Yahoo and Dmoz.
Link Exchange
If you were on-line in 2003-2004 then you would have been awash with requests for link exchanges. Although this technique still exists and you get requests, it really is not worth your time. Google simply know how to analyze link exchanges and devalue these links.
Blog Farms
Creating a free for all page which was full of anchor text rich links, once again a method that used to work well when Google and the other major search engines were in their babyhood but doing this now will have utterly no benefit whatsoever.
In the end its about being active online and using trial and error to see what works and what does not. If something does not work then move on and try again.
