Investing for dividends is one popular strategy in the stock market. This is a simple strategy, buying the best dividend paying stocks and holding onto them.

So, what are dividend stocks? This method of investing simply involves paying out a dividend or a small percentage of their earnings to their stock holders. So, by buying a dividend stock you are able to get some sort of income from the stock market.

Of course just because a stock pays off a dividend does not mean it is a good investment. Instead of going out and find a list of dividend paying stocks and buying ever stock on that list with both hands it can be much better to look at how strong the company is.

This way you do not wind up with a stock that is paying a good dividend, yet going to go bankrupt tomorrow.

So what is the deciding factor? What makes a good investment? Well everybody has their own opinions on how to find the best companies. But I like the idea of value investing myself, it is a time tested method of finding good quality companies.

This method involves using techniques such as the P/E ratio to help you to find stocks that will probably go up in future. It also helps you to find companies that are fundamentally strong and will probably not go under.

The best part about combining these two strategies is that as the price of the stock grows the dividend will also grow. It is also a very passive approach to the stock market, which can be good, if you do not want to spend your time in front of a computer trying to catch every up and down.

Momentum Investing and Income Investing work really great in a combo. After all the more things that are working for you the better.

Everyone knows what dividend investing is, but what is momentum investing? Simply put momentum investing is investing in stocks that are going up. They invest with the overall trend and not against it.

For example if stock XYZ started making higher highs and higher lows wouldn’t you want to invest in it? Of course it is going up after all and shows no signs of slowing down.

Does it actually work? It has the potential to be the most profitable way of investing money, but only if you do it right. The major problem that many investors make is that they simply hold onto the stock too long. For instance they may hold onto the stock as it goes from $50 to $200, but keep holding onto it as it comes back to $30 only a few months later.

Remember this rule, what goes up must come down. Because of this it is normally much wiser to stay into a stock as it is trending up, but then to get out as it shows the first signs of weakness.

If the stock is starting to turn around it is normally a good sign to get out and look for great investments elsewhere.

So how does this compare with income investing? Well it can work great if you can find a nice uptrending stock that is producing a great dividend.

In some cases the appreciation will give off much more then the dividend, but this is not always the case. There can be many times where you will hold a stock for months and end up breaking even; in situations like these it is nice to have another source of income on the stock so you at least made some money. The dividend will also help you to create an income from your stock while you wait to sell your stock, this can hold off the pressure to sell it too early.

Overall it seems that if you can find a great dividend paying stock in a solid uptrend it can turn into an extremely great trade. But of course the dividend itself is not a good reason to stay in a stock that is turning against you.

Dividend investing can be a great way to create some passive cash flow, yet it does have its drawbacks as well. There are some advantages and disadvantages of using it.

The nice thing about getting into income producing stocks is that you can get a monthly income without having to attempt to find stocks that will appreciate. Because you are getting a consistant cash flow off the stock it only has to not go down to be a good investment.

It is also a easier to manage a dividend portfolio because you do not have to consistantly monitor your posisitions you only have to get a List of high dividend paying stocks and invest in the securities that have a great dividend and are stable.

The major disadvantage to this strategy is that it tends to narrow your view. If you are only looking for stocks which produce a high dividend you may not be getting into the best investments. Sometimes companies give their investors a nice dividend to hide the fact that the company might not be the best thing to invest into.

One way to get around this is by combining dividend investing with value investing which uses factors such as the debt to equity ratio and the PE ratio in order to find the investments which are actually likely to head up. This way you can create your own guidelines which will help you determine when a stock is a good pick and when it is simply a terrible investment.

Another problem with simply investing for dividends is that you can forget about other ways of making money from the stock. Selling covered calls can be extremely profitable.

This is why I like to get into stocks which have dividends, high option premiums and they are not simply going to go under anytime soon. That way I can win in all 3 ways.

The stock market contains a lot of fantastic stocks paying dividends which give their shareholders the ability to earn an income from their invested money. But what exactly are they?

Basically a dividend lets the company to share a portion of their earnings with the people who invest their hard earned money with them. If the company is making money they can choose to distribute a portion of their earnings to their shareholders inthe form of dividends.

Dividends are spread out to each investor depending on how many shares of stock that investor holds. For instance if the company is distributing $1 million dollars of earnings and there are $10 million shares then each investor gets $.10 for every 1 share that they own. Not only does this keep the investors happy, but it also helps to get more investors to invest into the company.

It can also be a good sign if the company is paying out a dividend because it could show that it is making a lot of extra cash. However, it could also signal that the company is in trouble and wants to get new investors fast.

There may also be a problem with the company. Some companies are not very strong and are just paying out a dividend to get new investors to come in and save the company from failure.

So, if all you do is go out and find a list of stocks paying dividends and buy every last one, then you will probably get into some very bad investments. No matter how strong the dividend is will become utterly worthless if the stock goes to $0 in the next 6 months.

Simply by checking out some fundamental factors of the company such as the PE Ratio you can increase your chances of getting into companies whose stock will likely appreciate in the future and you are not relying totally on the dividends it is producing.

So, while dividends work great as an added bonus, they should not be the only reason for getting into a company.

Make Money Now

The major benefit of this strategy is that when you buy some great dividend paying stocks you are able to get a monthly income without having to wait 30 years to see a profit. That is a great advantage over other long term methods, after all it is pretty hard to keep putting money away into investments which you will not see any profit from for 30 years, it can be much easier to invest in something you think will start paying you money today.

2. Your Stock Doesn’t Have To Go Up

When you are investing in Dividend stocks they do not have to appreciate in order to make a huge gain in the market. As long as it is paying out a consistent cash flow you are able to generate a monthly income even in a sideways market without having to learn stock trading.

3. Strong Stocks Can Go Up

While you do not necessarily need to find great undervalued stocks with this strategy, it can be a great bonus. When you are just investing for an income the company does not really have to grow, however finding great quality companies can be well worth your while.

So by income investing you not only make money through dividends but you also make money by appreciation.

4. You can Make Extra Money by Selling Covered Calls

Ok let me add the last sentence, by income investing you can not only make money through dividends and appreciation you can make even more money through covered call writing.

This allows you to sell someone else the right to buy the stock from you at a certain price. If the stock does not make a big move up you are able to keep it and sell another call option against it next month. But if it does shoot up you do run the risk of getting called out and having to sell it. In many cases it can still be worth it.

These are just a few of the main advantages of dividend investing. The strategy can be extremely profitable strategy, but then again it might not be right for all people.
